Shortly after finishing up my degree at BYU, in finance, I worked for Zion’s Bank managing a commercial loan portfolio. I assisted the loan officers in analyzing financials, underwriting loans, and tracking the financial health of the companies with whom we were working. I worked with three loan officers and about $90 million in loans.
One of those officers was robbed. Well, actually, her car was robbed, in her locked garage, over night. They took her wallet, cd player, and some other miscellaneous items. She spent the next couple weeks trying to get her credit cards cancelled and fighting with those companies over thousands of dollars in charges against those cards. The problem came when the thief stole those credit cards. You see, those credit cards had the card number on the front. She didn’t have those numbers memorized. She also didn’t have the phone numbers of those credit card companies. She didn’t need them, right? They were right there on the back of the card. Finally, she also forgot about one of the cards and didn’t get it cancelled for a few weeks, after she saw the statement come in the mail for a maxed out card. What a headache!!! Right? Well, can you recite to yourself your credit card numbers, the phone numbers, and all of the companies with which you have cards. Now, add to that any automatic bill payments that you have tied to those cards, and getting those straightened out without having everything organized.
